Contact Lenses for Keratoconus and High Astigmatism

Many patients with eye diseases such as keratoconus, or post surgical eyes (corneal transplant, refractive surgery) have poor vision with conventional soft lenses.

Optomeyes specializes in the fitting of scleral or hybrid to give both clear vision and good comfort that is not possible with conventional designs. Topographical 3-D maps of the cornea are taken and then custom designed lenses are fabricated to provide the ideal correction. Soft contacts are essentially a blanket that mirrors the irregularities of the corneal, while scleral lenses and hybrid lenses correct the irregularities, creating clear more distortion free vision. It is a rewarding feeling be able to provide a patient a level of vision that has never been experienced prior to being fit in custom lenses.

Scleral Contact Lenses

Scleral contact lenses are large diameter rigid lenses that rest on the white part of the eye (sclera) while vaulting over the cornea. They provide excellent vision and comfort for those who cannot see well or get good comfort with conventional lenses. We can also fit multifocal or progressive designs even for those with very high or irregular astigmatism.

How are scleral contact lenses made?

An optometrist will generate a 3-D image of the surface of your cornea. The sclera part of your eye (the white part) will support the lens. The ocular surface is inputted into a precision fabrication machine that makes the lens out of highly oxygen permeable polymer.

Since scleral lenses are custom made for you the fitting process may take multiple visits to ensure the best vision and fit.

How long can they be worn?

Many patients can wear their scleral lenses for 12-14 hours each day.

How long do scleral lenses last?

Depending on the makeup of your natural tear chemistry and how well you take care of your scleral lenses, they should last approximately 1-2 years.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Optomeyes Eye Care offers the entire family of SynergEyes hybrid lenses. SynergEyes hybrid lenses are for daily wear and provide refractive error correction for hyperopia and myopia, with and without astigmatism, and Presbyopia.

These hybrids are also suitable for keratoconus, post corneal transplant, and ectasia from failed refractive surgery. These lenses are also great for those who like the vision of rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses but want the comfort of soft lenses. They are available in multifocal designs and last about 6 months.

Inserting, removing and caring for Scleral and Hybrid Lenses

Scleral and Hybrid lenses are very comfortable and easy to care for. The insertion and removal process is different from other types of lenses and our staff will guide you through this process at your Insertion and Removal training session.

Soft and Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

We also fit specialty soft and rigid gas permeable lenses mild to moderate cases of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. Rigid gas permeable lenses provide a cost-effective solution but are not as stable or comfortable as scleral lenses in more advanced cases.
