Myopia (i.e. nearsightedness) refers to the condition whereby a person is unable to see in the distance without glasses or contact lenses. It often starts in childhood and can be expected to worsen over time if nothing is done to stop it. Orthokeratology is a specialty treatment used to slow or stop the progression of myopia. It’s also called “Ortho-K” or “AOK” (accelerated orthokeratology).
Ortho-K lenses are rigid contact lenses that are custom designed by the doctor for the patient based on their corneal topography maps. After the lenses are designed and shipped to our office, we then teach the patient how to insert and remove them. These custom lenses are only worn at night (during sleep). They work by gently reshaping the front of the eye (cornea) so that upon awakening the person is able to see clearly without glasses or contacts!
If the patient continues to wear the lenses every night during sleep, they can enjoy clear vision during the day (without glasses or contacts). The patient is thrilled to see clearly with their naked eyes, and the doctor is thrilled because this technology also prevents the prescription from worsening over time.
For example, if a person starts wearing ortho K lenses at age 10 when their prescription is only -1.00 and wears them for the next 10 years, they will still be only -1.00. During the treatment, the patient won’t need any glasses or contacts to see clearly, but if they stop wearing the lenses at age 20, they will regress to being a -1.00 (opposed to possibly -8.00 or higher if no myopia control was performed). The reason we want to prevent high nearsightedness is not only because patients don’t like to wear thick, heavy, expensive glasses, but also because patients with higher myopia are actually at a significantly higher risk for eye disease: retinal tears, detachments, and glaucoma. All of these conditions can cause permanent vision loss and are much more likely to occur in people with high myopia. Therefore, Orthokeratology not only allows you to see clearly without glasses or contacts, but also protects the health of your eyes. Furthermore, when a patient’s prescription has stabilized (often by early 20s), if their prescription is low, they’re more likely to be a good candidate for laser eye surgery (a procedure that is more complex and less certain to provide excellent results in patients with higher prescriptions).
This treatment is primarily targeted for patients whose prescription is changing over time, but can also be used to treat patients with dry eye who aren’t comfortable in normal lenses, but don’t want to consider laser surgery. For example, Dr. Bowden and Dr. Hennenfent both wear ortho-K lenses instead of glasses or regular contacts because they find them more comfortable than soft lenses! Ortho K is safe and not known to cause any long-term effects.
