Canadian Diabetes Association Recommends Annual Eye Exams For All Diabetic Patients

  • A recent Announcement by the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) revealed that 6 million Canadians have conditions that are considered "pre-diabetes" and one quarter of those people are likely to progress to Type II diabetes in three to five years.
  • More Canadians are at risk of developing diabetes and its complications. The CDA has released new clinical guidelines that emphasize early identifications and treatment of patients at risk.
  • More than 1.8 million Canadians are currently diagnosed with diabetes, up to 70% over the last decade. Researchers estimate by 2016 more than 2.4 million will be diagnosed with diabetes and 80% of people with diabetes will die from heart disease and face increased risk of strokes.
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness due to Diabetic Retinopathy in Canadian Adults.
  • Diabetic Retinopathy commonly exists at the time of diagnosis (60%) in Non-insulin dependent diabetics and 30% will have diabetic retinopathy in 5 years.
  • For this reason any person with the diagnosis of diabetes or "pre-diabetes" is strongly recommended to get routine annual eye exams which includes Digital Retinal Imaging.
  • It is important to send a Diabetic Eye Report following every eye exam to your Family Doctor, Optomeyes will send this free of charge.
